Our History

DeColores Ministries is an interdenominational Christian movement rooted in the Cursillo method of spiritual renewal. We welcome Christians from all church backgrounds and traditions who desire a deeper relationship with Jesus Christ and a stronger connection to the Christian community.

The Cursillo movement began in Spain in 1949 when Bishop Juan Hervas and a group of lay leaders developed a method for renewing and strengthening Christian faith. Their approach centered on a three-day retreat experience followed by ongoing opportunities for spiritual growth, fellowship, and service.

Cursillo was introduced to the United States in 1957 and quickly spread across the country. In West Michigan, the movement grew throughout the 1960s and 1970s, attracting Christians from many denominations who shared a desire for spiritual renewal and Christian fellowship.

As participation became increasingly interdenominational, a new expression of the movement emerged. In 1980, the first DeColores weekend was held in Muskegon, Michigan. Building on the foundation of Cursillo, DeColores was created to provide a Christ-centered experience that could be shared by Christians from diverse church traditions.

The name DeColores is Spanish for "of colors" and reflects the beauty and unity found in the many expressions of the Christian faith. From its beginning, DeColores has emphasized Christian unity, fellowship, and a shared commitment to following Jesus Christ.

Since its founding, DeColores Ministries has expanded throughout Michigan and beyond, serving thousands of men and women through weekends, small groups, reunions, and ongoing community involvement.

While DeColores remains firmly rooted in the Cursillo method, it has been adapted to support an interdenominational Christian experience. Rather than focusing on the traditions of a single denomination, DeColores centers on the common beliefs that unite Christians and the life-changing message of Jesus Christ.
